What Would You Do?

Los Angeles Times

An Airstream trailer is dwarfed last Sunday by approaching flames in Carbon Canyon in Malibu. Several structures were burned that day by the fast-moving blaze, dubbed the Canyon fire. View more photos

I watched the Evening News coverage of the California wildfires. So many people had to quickly evacuate their homes with little more than the clothes on their backs, only to return to rubble of their homes and charred remains of their possessions.

I thought about what I would do under similar circumstances.

Possessions can be replaced and my utmost concern would be that our family was safe. Then I would make sure I had some clothes, toiletries, my wedding & engagement rings, laptop, cell phone & purse. I also would want to make sure we had a copy of our insurance policy.

I asked my oldest son. He would grab his swim medals and coin collection.

What would you take if you only had a few minutes to grab some items to save?

If the family and pets were safe, it would be pictures and my jewelry box full of family heirlooms.

Having to plan every year for the possibility of evacuating for hurricanes, our family has this down to a science. Official papers are already somewhere safe, most family photos on digitally saved, and we have meds and kennels for the pets. You only take what is absolutely necessary.

I live in So Cal and near one of the fires. My oldest daughter goes to school very near one of the fires as well. We had to decide quickly what to get out of her house in case she needed to evacuate. Fortunately she didn't...

Oh my goodness Mike, thank god you didn't have to. How scary! I am praying for a big rainstorm.

Pictures. That's all I would really care about, I think.
The picture is terrifying.

As soon as I make sure my family and pet are safe, I will grab our photos on CD. Important papers, too, if I have time. I was just talking today bout how I need to buy a small safe that's easy to pick up when you need to evacuate at the last minute. I live in Nor Cal so we're a distance from where the fires are, but still very sad.

My list is the same as yours, but I would also grab a couple of pics off the wall of our family; ones that have never been digitized somewhere.
